Austria can look back on over 60 years of migration history in the Second Republic. From the original assumption that immigrants are merely “guests” who only stay for a few years and
then return to their countries of origin is no longer an issue today.
- Austria is a country of immigration and Vienna is the best example of this.
- Around 44% of Viennese are of foreign origin, i.e. they either have a foreign nationality or a foreign country of birth.
- Around half of all Viennese have a migrant background, i.e. (in the statistics) both of their parents were born abroad.
